UK commercial TV channels operate under licenses from the Office of Communications - Ofcom, which demands they comply with the Code of Advertising Standards and Practice, as well as consumer law.

Ofcom has contracted day-to-day regulation of radio and television commercials to the Advertising Standards Authority.

Many licensees demand that commercials are cleared through the Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre. BACC has a long history of pre-clearing commercials for ITV, Channel Four, Channel Five and BSkyB.
